What lives in the Darkness?

There are strange things in this world one never comes to truly believe  even if witnessed first hand.  Something other worldly  about it makes the denial that much easier.  You let the denial become the truth because its too hard for any of us to accept there are things in this world that are unnatural living with us.  Its hard for us to acknowledge it even if we saw it with our own eyes.  Mike witnessed something he doesn't quite believe himself but after listening to his story and seeing the nervous fear of doubt on his face, I have come to believe him.

Mike works at a huge meat packing plant checking sewage runoff and the pH levels of the surrounding lagoons and some of the fish hatcheries they have in the back.  He works days on most shifts but sometimes has a stretch of night shifts that go really late into the night.  During one of those night shifts is when this particular event happened.

The area behind the plant is basically a big field with gravel walkways that workers follow to get to the lagoons and some of the hatcheries.  Tall grass lines most of the gravel walkways and there are trees that form  a border between the open field and the small lagoons.  Walk far enough and you clear the trees and see the lagoons all lined around with grass and weeds and behind that are medium sized trees.  At night its a little hazardous to go out there without some sort of light because it literally gets as black as night can get.  You can not see a foot in front of you without light.

One night during his night shift Mike had to go grab samples from the lagoons to bring back to run pH tests.   The facility is about 100 yards from the furthest lagoon and Mike had to go to all of them.  The only light he brought with him was the LED light on his helmet and a smaller handheld LED flashlight.  The darkness is so thick you can't see past the small orb of illuminated ground you point the LED at and the light travels maybe twenty feet before darkness completely devours it.

After his third sample maybe 40 or 50 yards away from the facility he suddenly heard something scurry away through the gravel path.  At first he thought it might be an animal that made it through the fences that lined most the area but then he started listening more carefully and it sounded like heavy footsteps as if someone was running away.  "Great" Mike thought, if it was a person he had to make sure to have them leave because no one was allowed in their back area lagoons.  He was hoping it was just an animal but deep down he thought otherwise.  He continued down the gravel paths collecting his samples until he finally reached the final lagoon, the one furthest away.  As he was scooping up his sample he heard something splash into the water on the far side of the lagoon.  Mike thought maybe it was one of the juvenile fishes jumping.  He pointed his LED in that direction but the dim light barely made it across halfway but he could see the water rippling.  He slowly walked by the banks to try and get some light over to the other side then he started hearing gnawing and ripping and wet slapping.  He freaked for a moment, he thought maybe a coyote or wild dog had caught one of the fishes and was having a late night snack and wouldn't appreciate being interrupted.  He got close enough and instead of a wild dog or coyote he saw a man ripping open a raw fish and biting into it like a crazed animal.  He had no shirt on only dark brown raggedy shorts.  His skin was a slimy blue hue, almost translucent in appearance.  He had huge puss filled blisters on his back and arms.  He hair was stringy and dirty and his arms had a thin toned muscular look to them.

He was looking down gnawing at his catch when he noticed the light from Mike's LED light.  He bolted up his head and looked at Mike, his eyes glowed like a cat's does when reflecting light.  Just two huge glowing orbs of light looking right back at Mike.  Both stayed still for a moment looking at each other then the man quickly bolted to side and disappeared in the darkness out of the light.  Mike quickly readjusted his aim and found the  man running around the bank of the lagoon towards him.  That's when Mike unfroze himself of his fear and started running back toward the facility.  As he was running he could hear the heavy steps of the man in the gravel running behind him.  Mike turned quickly to look behind him to see how far the man was and with the helmet light shined it back and saw the man right behind him at the edge of the light.  He could see the man's glowing eyes and his pale blue skin.

Looking back while running Mike tripped on a boulder and fell to one knee but quickly got back up. Mike stopped for a second when he noticed the man didn't advance on him, he just stayed right at the edge of the light.  Slowly Mike started to walk backward and slowly the man followed with his luminous eyes always staying just outside the light but at the edge of darkness.  Mike walked back the rest of the gravel walkway maybe 50 yards backwards.  As soon as they got close enough where the floodlights from the facility lit the ground the slimy man disappeared into the darkness.

Mike never saw him again but he refuses to work nights anymore.  He can't even go outside when its dark.  He transferred to a different department.  When he told me his story and I saw the look of nervous doubt on his face, the doubt if it really happened, I knew it was real.  Something happened out there so real that it now affects Mike's daily life.  There are things in this world that we don't want to witness, things we hope are far away from us but are probably right near us at the edges of darkness without us for the most part, ever knowing it.
